Arizona Diamondbacks shortstop Nick Ahmed will undergo surgery on his injured right shoulder, manager Torey Lovullo told reporters pregame on Monday.

The surgery will take place on Wednesday to clean out some soft tissue and bone spurs that have been bothering him, the skipper added.

However, Lovullo did not have a timetable for how long Ahmed would be out for or when he could return.

“This has been bothering him for some time and he’s on the road to recovery being able to play at full strength,” the manager said.

“I know that he’s been protecting it and doing all that he could. He’s such a gamer to try to get back to us but it just wasn’t working and this is the best situation for him to keep moving forward.”

It’s been a tough 2022 season for the 32-year-old Ahmed, who was shut down on March 30 due to the right shoulder injury before returning to the D-backs’ lineup on April 22.

However, the shortstop was placed back on the injured list for the same ailment on May 16, where he has remained since.

In 17 games for Arizona this season (54 plate appearances), Ahmed is slashing .231/.259/.442 to go along with two doubles, three home runs, seven RBI and two walks.

With the Diamondbacks starting shortstop on the shelf for the foreseeable future, rookie Geraldo Perdomo will get a chance to solidify his place in the lineup as well as prove he belongs in the big leagues.

Perdomo is slashing .214/.328/.286 on 33 hits (four doubles, two triples, one home run) and 10 RBI in addition to 24 walks and one stolen base in 54 games for Arizona this year.

The D-backs return Chase Field for a six-game homestand that starts against the Cincinnati Reds on Monday at 6:40 p.m. on 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station.

Arizona RHP Merrill Kelly (5-3, 3.32 ERA) is scheduled to start against Cincinnati LHP Mike Minor (0-2, 8.64 ERA).
