ASU running back Raleek Brown to shut down for medical redshirt in 2024

Arizona State running back Raleek Brown will be shut down for the season and take a medical redshirt year due to a hamstring issue that had limited him since the start of 2024.

“No point to bring him back for two to three games when we could use a medical to get him 100% healthy, because I don’t know if we’re going to be able to get him 100% healthy this year,” ASU head coach Kenny Dillingham told reporters Tuesday.

Brown, a transfer from USC, appeared in two games and carried the ball nine times for 42 yards. He added three catches for six yards.

The 5-foot-9 back injured his hamstring in camp and made his first appearance for ASU on Sept. 12 against Texas State, touching the ball three times in the third game of the season. A reinjury kept him out another game until an Oct. 5 game against Kansas, when he took seven carries for 41 yards.

He joined the Sun Devils with three years of eligibility left after playing both running back and receiver for the Trojans.

Brown appeared in all 14 games for USC in 2022, rushing for 227 yards on 42 carries while making 16 catches for 175 yards. He also returned kickoffs.

The Mater Dei High School product was a five-star recruit out of high school and joined ASU as the highest-rated high school recruit to suit up in Dillingham’s brief head-coaching tenure.

“Getting back healthy I’ll be back soon #ForksUp 🔱😈,” Brown wrote on his X account.

Arizona State has heavily utilized starting running back Cam Skattebo (150 carries, 848 yards) this season. Backups DeCarlos Brooks (24 carries for 116 yards) and Kyson Brwon (14 carries for 80 yards) have received limited opportunities behind Skattebo.

ASU visits Oklahoma State on Saturday before hosting UCF, heading to No. 17 Kansas State, facing No. 9 BYU in Tempe and then closing the year at rival Arizona.
