D-backs executive Amiel Sawdaye a finalist in search for Rockies GM

Arizona Diamondbacks assistant general manager Amiel Sawdaye is among the known finalists as the Colorado Rockies near the end to their general manager search, reports The Athletic’s Brittany Ghiroli and Ken Rosenthal.

Cleveland Guardians assistant general manager Matt Forman is another finalist, while others could still be in the mix. Kansas City’s Scott Sharp and Toronto’s James Click did not make the cut, according to The Athletic.

Colorado fired general manager Bill Schmidt on Oct. 1 after the Rockies went 43-119 this season, just two wins better than the worst season ever for an 162-game schedule (2024 White Sox).

Sawdaye joined the D-backs under GM Mike Hazen in 2017 and was a top lieutenant along with former assistant GM Jared Porter before Porter became the New York Mets’ general manager in 2020. Arizona elevated Mike Fitzgerald to serve alongside Sawdaye with Porter’s move to New York.

Sawdaye even oversaw the day-to-day operations as top decision-maker for the D-backs when Hazen took a leave of absence in 2021 as Hazen’s wife battled brain cancer.

Prior to Sawdaye’s time with the Diamondbacks, he interned with the Boston Red Sox from 2002-03 and worked his way up in the franchise from there.

Sawdaye worked with Hazen in Boston from 2006-16, first as director of amateur scouting and then VP of amateur and international scouting.

Sawdaye was a candidate for the Washington Nationals’ top executive job this offseason before Paul Toboni was hired.
