6-time WNBA All-Star DeWanna Bonner re-signs with Phoenix Mercury

DeWanna Bonner is headed back to the Phoenix Mercury for her 17th WNBA season, the team announced on Sunday.

Bonner was drafted fifth overall by the Mercury in 2009 and played her first 10 seasons in Phoenix before she was traded to the Connecticut Sun for three first-round picks in 2020.

Following five years in Connecticut and a brief stop with the Indiana Fever to begin the 2025 season, the 38-year-old signed with Phoenix as a free agent on July 8.

The six-time WNBA All-Star (2015, 2018-19, 2021, 2023-24), and two-time WNBA champion (2009, 2014) averaged 10.9 points and 4.3 rebounds in 24 games (one start) with the Mercury last season.

She led all WNBA reserves in points (10.6) and steals (0.9) per game (minimum 25 games played).

Bonner ranks second in games played (359) and third in points (5,081), rebounds (2,175), assists (729) and blocks (244) in Mercury franchise history.

Earlier on Sunday, the Mercury officially announced the signings of Alyssa Thomas and Kahleah Copper. Sami Whitcomb also reportedly re-signed with Phoenix on Sunday.

The Mercury further signed Ashten Prechtel, Aisha Sheppard, Kianna Williams, Lauren Jensen, Morgan Maly and Kyara Linskens to training camp deals, Quionche Carter to a rookie-scale contract and Valeriane Ayayi to a deal on Sunday.

Training camp contracts do not count towards the salary cap unless the player makes the opening night roster.

Training camp begins on April 19, and the Mercury open the preseason on April 25 vs. the Sky. Phoenix will begin the regular season on May 9 with a WNBA Finals rematch at the Las Vegas Aces.
