Corbin Carroll exits game vs. Blue Jays with low back tightness, does not expect to miss time

PHOENIX — Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll was removed from Sunday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays at Chase Field due to low back tightness.

Carroll did not go back out on defense at the start of the fifth inning after he spoke with the trainer and manager Torey Lovullo in the dugout.

After the game, Carroll said he experienced a little tightness in his back but could have remained in the game if the score was close. Arizona was down 10-1 at the time and lost 10-4.

“I felt it a little yesterday and then kind of took a swing in the cage where it just locked up a little more on me,” Carroll said. “Felt good about playing and all that. Once the game got out of hand, I didn’t need to take more at-bats.”

The Diamondbacks have Monday off for Carroll to get time to recover, and the outfielder said he was pretty sure he would be in the lineup on Tuesday.

Lovullo went a step further.

“He’s already in the lineup, he’s starting in right field on Tuesday,” Lovullo said.

Carroll missed a pair of games last weekend on Arizona’s East Coast road trip due to a tight left hip flexor but has been productive after returning.

The two-time All-Star hit the go-ahead grand slam in Saturday’s win, entering Sunday having hit .304 with three doubles and a home run over his previous six games.

Carroll said he thinks the back tightness is related to his hip issue.

“I think maybe trying to get the bat through a little differently, maybe a little weird compensation,” Carroll said. “But yeah, nothing crazy, just got a little treatment. I feel like I can go play right now.”

“He’s got some low back issues that have been taking place,” Lovullo said. “I told you guys that there were some things that were happening around his body, but he’s just tightly wound. I think it’s a day-to-day thing he’s going to continue to monitor.”

Jorge Barrosa entered Sunday’s game for Carroll in right field.

The Diamondbacks host the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday.
