Ketel Marte crushes majestic home run, Diamondbacks win series vs. Giants

SAN FRANCISCO — Ketel Marte hit the farthest home run at Oracle Park this season during the seventh inning on Tuesday, as the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the San Francisco Giants 7-5.

Arizona won the series and improved to a season-high six games over .500 at 30-24. The D-backs have won their first five games against the Giants (22-33) this year.

Marte’s no-doubter traveled a projected 452 feet, the farthest at the renowned pitcher’s park since Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 454-footer last September.

The last ball hit that far at night (not at sunset) in San Francisco was in 2022 by Christian Walker for the D-backs (461 feet).

Marte attacked a first-pitch sinker over the plate from left-hander Erik Miller, like an ambush hunter.

“Obviously, it’s a great feeling,” Marte said. “I was looking for a fastball in that at-bat, and I saw it on the first pitch.”

The last time Marte hit a ball that far was on September 16, 2024.

Nolan Arenado — who left Tuesday’s game with right groin tightness but is expected to be OK — has played a lot of baseball in San Francisco, 77 games worth. He could not recall having seen a ball hit quite like that.

“He’s hit some balls lately that I’ve never really seen before,” Arenado said. “Last homestand, he hit some balls that were just rockets that I haven’t really seen since maybe like (Carlos Gonzalez). That homer today just shows how special he is.”

Recent history repeated itself in a sense, as Giants manager Tony Vitello brought in a left-hander to face Marte at Chase Field last week, and Marte greeted Matt Gage with a walk-off home run. On Tuesday, the Giants turned to another southpaw with Marte starting the inning in the hole. Tommy Troy worked a walk, and Marte pounded the first pitch high into left-field seats.

The blast, which extended Marte’s hitting streak to 10 games, came at a critical point in the contest.

Arizona held a 4-2 lead, and the Giants had come close to breaking through against D-backs starter Eduardo Rodriguez.

Rodriguez put forth a bend-don’t-break type of outing with lots of hard contact, but he managed to earn another quality start, Arizona’s 16th in the past 21 games. The Giants loaded the bases in the fifth inning, but Rodriguez struck out slugger Rafael Devers looking at a changeup.

“I’ve been throwing just a curveball, fastball, cutter in his first two at-bats,” Rodriguez explained. “(Gabriel) Moreno called a changeup and I decided to throw it for a strike to see if I could get a swing-and-miss. They called a strike three, and I’m happy with that.”

Rodriguez finished with six innings and two earned runs.

Marte’s home run provided some critical room for error, which was needed as the Giants scored three runs off the Arizona bullpen. A Moreno RBI single in the eighth inning provided extra insurance.

Eight of Arizona’s nine starters recorded a hit, the exception being Corbin Carroll, whose 13-game hitting streak came to an end.

Carroll went 0-for-3 with two walks and a stolen base.

Nobody in the lineup knocked multiple hits, as the D-backs had to scrap for runs early.

Arizona’s first four runs came via a Ildemaro Vargas ground out, Moreno sacrifice fly, Adrian Del Castillo home run and another Vargas ground out. A key error from Giants shortstop Willy Adames in the sixth inning helped Arizona extend its lead to 4-2.

The Diamondbacks have won 10 of their last 12 games to vault into the second NL Wild Card spot with 108 games to play.

“We’re pitching very well, I think in our offense is doing a really good job and obviously our guys are getting really hot,” Arenado said. “Ketel’s just been unbelievable, truly. He makes us go. … But I think as a group, one through nine, we’re just doing a really good job.”

Diamondbacks-Giants Wednesday probables

The series and Arizona’s 13-game stretch against the Colorado Rockies and Giants ends on Wednesday with Michael Soroka (3.27 ERA) getting the start for the D-backs.

Rookie right-hander Trevor McDonald (4.76 ERA) will pitch for San Francisco.
