Jordyn Tyson to begin rookie season with Saints on IR

Former Arizona State star wide receiver Jordyn Tyson will be on injured reserve to begin his rookie season with the New Orleans Saints due to a hamstring injury he suffered in a joint practice on Aug. 13.

The roster designation means that the eighth-overall pick will miss at least four games before he can make his NFL debut.

While the injury is on the same right hamstring that Tyson injured last season at ASU, the Saints coaching staff has said they don’t believe the two injuries are connected.

“My understanding of this one, any player that was put in his situation where your foot kind of slips and you get shoved from behind, this has nothing to do with Jordyn’s history,” Saints head coach Kellen Moore told reporters. “Any player in that situation probably has the same diagnosis coming out of this.”

Tyson initially injured that hamstring in ASU’s seventh game of the season, an upset win over Texas Tech. The injury happened on a route away from the play, and he remained in the game and had a dominant final drive to set up the go-ahead touchdown.

The receiver missed the following three games and recorded four catches across the final two regular-season contests. He did not play in the Sun Bowl.

Tyson’s hamstring led to minimal participation in the pre-draft process, causing doubt as to whether he should be one of the top receivers off the board. He held a private pro day in Tempe one week before the draft where he showed he wasn’t hampered by any lingering issues.

He was the second receiver taken, going eighth to New Orleans after former Ohio State wideout Carnell Tate was picked fourth by the Tennessee Titans.

Many thought a reunion with Cam Skattebo on the New York Giants was in the cards after Skattebo and the Giants’ brass attended ASU’s pro day together, and were seen talking with Tyson. However, that might’ve swung when Arvell Reese, an Ohio State product who was seen by some as the top defender in the class, fell to New York at No. 5.

The earliest that Tyson can debut is Week 5 when the Saints host the Minnesota Vikings on Oct. 11. New Orleans will host the Arizona Cardinals on Dec. 27.
