Diamondbacks’ Corbin Carroll to return to lineup Friday following MRI

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll will return to the starting lineup Friday against the Texas Rangers after undergoing an MRI, according to Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro.

Gambadoro added that nothing concerning was found on Carroll’s MRI, which he underwent Thursday after dealing with lower back discomfort.

The three-time All-Star was scratched from the Diamondbacks’ game against the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday and did not play in the series finale Wednesday. Carroll made just two plate appearances as a pinch hitter in the series opener against the Royals Monday.

Carroll said he suffered a back spasm last week during the D-backs’ home series against the Philadelphia Phillies. He has gone through ups and downs with his health and performance as he has slashed just .148/.200/.222 with a home run and four RBIs in his last 15 games.

In 141 games, Carroll has slashed .240/.334/.800 with 19 home runs, 61 RBIs and 21 stolen bases.

Carroll’s imminent return comes as the D-backs have welcomed back several key players earlier this week, including Corbin Burnes on Tuesday and Zac Gallen and Michael Soroka on Wednesday.

With 15 games remaining in the regular season, the D-backs (78-69) enter Friday’s series against the Rangers a half game behind the San Diego Padres (78-68) for the third and final Wild Card spot in the National League.
