While fans will find aspects of Torey Lovullo’s managing to critique, his care factor will always be there.
The Arizona Diamondbacks’ season didn’t end the way anyone wanted it to, and Lovullo knows that. It only adds to his motivation to bring success to the Valley.
“I get the frustrations of the fans and some of the super fans that are very engaged every single day,” Lovullo told Arizona Sports’ Burns & Gambo on Thursday. “I want to win a World Championship. We have one World Series appearance in 10 years, and we got to win a World Series before I can say that will change.
“I’m going to do everything that I possibly can every single day until that happens.”
Lovullo, however, said he judges success in multiple ways, not just by wins and losses.
“What do you judge as a success or a failure?” Lovullo asked. “Every single day I come in here, and I try to make the players the best versions of themselves on and off the field. And if you’re looking at that, that’s been a success.”
He added that there has also been success in terms of wins and losses, even though the D-backs have just one World Series appearance in his 10 years.
During Lovullo’s tenure in charge, Arizona has had six winning seasons and has won at least 80 games in all but two seasons (excluding the shortened 2020 season).
“But if you’re looking at it from a different scope and you want playoff wins and World Series wins, we haven’t done it,” Lovullo said. “I can’t say that I’ve done a perfect job in that area, and I haven’t done a perfect job every single day, but I’m going to grow and learn until we do, and we are going to win a World Championship here.
“So I view successes in a different way than a lot of other people. But I think we’ve had a lot of successes here. And I think the people that know that are the ones that are the true fans and understand what really happens here on a daily basis.”
Lovullo is now locked in with Arizona for the next two years, and he’s motivated to break the Diamondbacks’ three year postseason drought.
