Arizona State star Reed Harris became the 11th member of the team’s Tillman Leadership Council, head coach Kenny Dillingham said Wednesday.
“He deserves it, and he’s been working his butt off,” Dillingham said on the Sparky’s Den Podcast. “He’s showing it on and off the field, being a leader.”
The senior wide receiver leads the Big 12 in receiving yards (590, 111 more than second place) and touchdowns (seven, no other wide receiver has at least six). He is second in catches (34) behind Baylor’s Gavin Freeman (42).
Harris’ addition comes after three players on the council suffered significant injuries:
- Linebacker Zyrus Fiaseu, out for the season
- Tight end Khamari Anderson, out for the season
- Safety Lyrik Rawls, out until late in the regular season
“It’s difficult, but every team has those challenges. It’s not special to us. It’s an excuse when people say it because everyone has their own challenges,” Dillingham said.
The head coach said the council serves as an intermediary between he and the 105-player team, and it helps him decide how to integrate different changes within a season.
Members have Pat Tillman patches on their jerseys during games, which Dillingham said is an easy conversation starter for game broadcasts to keep talking about Tillman’s legacy.
