Last season, Phoenix Suns guard Collin Gillespie blew away his career highs in total minutes, minutes per game and games played.
But after falling into a shooting slump to end the year, Gillespie is now more prepared to withstand the extensive workload he’s tasked with as the Suns’ sixth man.
Gillespie joined Arizona Sports’ Burns & Gambo, where he discussed his offseason preparation.
“I was a little smarter about the workouts I was doing,” Gillespie said. “I took more time after last season ended to start my workouts up. I took like three-ish weeks to let my body reset and deal with the stuff I was dealing with.”
Last season, Gillespie played in 80 games and started in 58 of them due to various injuries. He averaged 28.5 minutes per game.
For context, in his previous two seasons, he played in 57 games combined and started only nine of them. He averaged only 11.7 minutes per game in those games.
When talking about his end-of-season slump last year, Gillespie said that he felt fatigued and is putting in more focus on balancing his workouts this season.
In the Suns’ opening-game blowout loss to the Portland Trail Blazers, Gillespie went 0-for-8 from the field and from 3-point range but was confident in the looks that he got.
“I thought I got great looks,” Gillespie said. “Obviously they didn’t fall like I wanted them to, but I’ll continue to take those looks.”
The Suns will host the Golden State Warriors in their home opener Saturday as Gillespie and the rest of the team look to get back on track.
