With the MLB trade deadline officially over, the Arizona Diamondbacks weren’t the sellers some believed them to be, but their roster does look a little different than it did on Opening Day.
It’s not been all by design that 15 members of the 25-man Opening Day roster remain post-trade deadline.
Here’s a look at the roster turnover by positional group.
Starting Pitching
Then
- Zack Greinke
- Shelby Miller
- Patrick Corbin
- Rubby De La Rosa
- Robbie Ray
Now
- Patrick Corbin
- Robbie Ray
- Archie Bradley
- Zack Godley
- Braden Shipley
With Zack Greinke and Rubby De La Rosa on the DL, in addition to Shelby Miller being sent down to the minors, the D-backs’ starting pitching staff looks a lot different than it did with Archie Bradley, Zack Godley and Braden Shipley taking over the reins.
Bullpen
Then
- Jake Barrett, RHP
- Silvino Bracho, RHP
- Andrew Chafin, LHP
- Tyler Clippard, RP
- Randall Delgado, RHP
- Daniel Hudson, RHP
- Brad Ziegler, CP
Now
- Daniel Hudson, RHP
- Randall Delgado, RHP
- Jake Barrett, RHP
- Enrique Burgos, RHP
- Steve Hathaway, LHP
- Dominic Leone, RHP
- Adam Loewen, LHP
- Evan Marshall, RHP
The bullpen was the area affected most by trades this season with departures by Ziegler to the Boston Red Sox and Tyler Clippard to the New York Yankees. Discounting an injury to Andrew Chafin, the only remaining pitchers in the bullpen since Opening Day are Jake Barrett, Randall Delgado and Daniel Hudson.
Infield
Then- Jean Segura, 2B
- Paul Goldschmidt, 1B
- Jake Lamb, 3B
- Nick Ahmed, SS
- Chris Owings, 2B/SS/CF
- Phil Gosselin, IF
- Brandon Drury, 3B
Now
- Jean Segura, 2B
- Paul Goldschmidt, 1B
- Jake Lamb, 3B
- Phil Gosselin, IF
- Chris Owings, 2B/SS/CF
- Brandon Drury, 3B
Owings got the starting nod in centerfield to start the year because of A.J. Pollock’s injury but due to Nick Ahmed’s hip injury is now also seeing time at shortstop. Meanwhile, Brandon Drury has been moved to the outfield upon the injuries there, although he’s also seen backup time behind Lamb at third base.
Catchers
Then- Welington Castillo, C
- Chris Herrmann, C
Now
- Welington Castillo, C
- Tuffy Gosewisch, C
With Chris Herrmann on the DL with a strained right hamstring, Tuffy Gosewisch has filled in as backup catcher behind Welington Castillo.
Outfield
Then- Socrates Brito, CF
- David Peralta, RF
- Yasmany Tomas, LF
- Rickie Weeks Jr., LF
- Brandon Drury, LF
- Chris Owings, 2B/SS/CF
Now
- Brandon Drury, LF
- David Peralta, RF
- Rickie Weeks Jr., LF
- Yasmany Tomas, LF
- Chris Owings, 2B/SS/CF
- Michael Bourn, CF
Although Socrates Brito got the nod to start the season in the outfield, a toe injury has put him on the DL and off the MLB roster, but there has been a bright spot in Michael Bourn, who signed with Arizona after being released by the Toronto Blue Jays earlier this year.
