Is Corbin Carroll a ‘helmet hater’ or is losing his headwear just part of being a tripling speedster?

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll is synonymous with two things: speed and triples.

One visual those pair of things provide fans with is the face of a determined runner without his helmet securely attached, typically once he rounds second base.

In fact, social media personality Bird Ball took the time to break down how often this phenomenon has occurred in Carroll’s 51 career three-baggers.

“There is no other man who runs the basepaths more with less cranium protection than Corbin Carroll. We need to get to the bottom of this,” Bird Ball said in his YouTube video.

Losing his helmet chasing triples has caused him some pain as it turns out. Carroll got drilled in the head on May 19 as he was sliding into third on a Luis Arraez throw and scored while holding his head.

The baseball influencer claims that Carroll is a “helmet hater,” but is he?

Let’s take a look.

Corbin Carroll: Reached third base 52 times, helmet fell off 31 times

The star outfielder, including an inside-the-park home run in August 2024, has experienced helmetlessness heading to third 31 times since making his MLB debut in 2022, according to Bird Ball.

Of his “helmet heavings,” the influencer identified 29 of them happening between second and third base.

“It seems that as Corbin picks up a head of steam, a heart of helmet hate follows,” Bird Ball said. “By far his favorite spot to lose his headgear is as he’s rounding second base (14 times). The combined hatred and centripetal force of a man running 30-feet per second is just too much for the friction of a common helmet to withstand.”

Bird Ball claims his helmet has fallen off just twice when Carroll has reached third base when he’s started on the bases. 

“I found that when Corbin starts as a runner, he generally does not build up enough hate in his heart to help heave off the helmet,” Bird Call said.

Would a mullet comeback vanquish his helmet neglect?

Though just for a brief period, Carroll rocked a mullet to begin his professional career with Arizona. And as Bird Ball points out, he only lost his helmet once during the five triples he recorded while having the mullet.

Carroll’s sixth triple and on were executed in his post-mullet era.

“This could be a factor, as his gorgeous locks (returning) could help dampen the helmet hatred that permeates through this skull and skin,” Bird Ball said in his closing.

Carroll is one triple away from matching Stephen Drew’s franchise record (52) regardless of how he really feels about his helmet or if he just needs a chin strap.
