Ahead of facing the Cardinals on Monday Night Football, Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer had an owl fly into his home on Thursday.

Schottenheimer’s wife, Gemmi, posted photos and videos of the owl that entered their house on her Instagram stories.

When speaking to reporters on Friday, the Cowboys coach recounted the experience.

“I don’t know if the owl was looking for the snakes (that recently bit his dogs) or what was going on, but it’s actually the story of a coach’s wife,” Schottenheimer said via Jon Machota of The Athletic. “So I’m in game plan meetings last night doing some red zone stuff and I leave the meeting about 10 o’clock and I go back to my phone, and I literally had 72 text messages on my phone. Seventy-two. I’m a popular guy, so that’s nothing abnormal.

“But it literally started with a text from my son to his mother saying, ‘There’s a big hawk-sized bird in here,’ and I began to look down and there was an owl. My son was doing some work and he had the sliders open and all of a sudden an owl came (into the house).”

The coach ended up telling his wife he was staying at the family’s condo before animal control eventually removed the owl.

“But they got the owl removed,” Schottenheimer said. “The owl has been returned to its safe domain. … They called animal control. A gentleman came with a net, like a pool net. I might have to look at that as another job. Just kinda become an animal control guy. I’m so experienced now with wildlife in and around Dallas.”

Perhaps this wise owl was only there to help teach Dallas how to play defense.
