Alek Thomas blasts home run in Mexico, the nation he represented in World Baseball Classic

Center fielder Alek Thomas quickly made the Arizona Diamondbacks’ trip to Mexico City a memorable one, as he smashed a home run in his first at-bat on Saturday.

After two balls from San Diego Padres right-hander German Marquez, Thomas sent the first strike he saw 400 feet to right field.

It came after he took his place in the outfield with the Mexican flag draped around his shoulders. Thomas played for Mexico in the World Baseball Classic this spring, as his mother is a native of Sonora.

The knock extended his streak of games with a hit to six, with doubles in four of the first five games and his first home run of the season in the only contest without.

The two-run homer scored Jose Fernandez, who just before had a two-run RBI double to continue his blazing hot start that includes hits in 14 of his last 15 starts.
