Allen Webster to receive start Sunday for D-backs, Jhoulys Chacin optioned to Triple-A Reno

Prior to Saturday’s game, the Arizona Diamondbacks announced that Sunday’s scheduled starter Robbie Ray would receive an addition day of rest before taking the mound Monday in the D-backs’ series opener versus the Rockies in Colorado.

With that, a void was left in the Arizona starting rotation, pressing the D-backs to promote 25-year-old right-hander Allen Webster from Triple-A Reno to take Ray’s place on the mound in the team’s series finale Sunday afternoon versus Oakland.

Having made five appearances for the D-backs thus far this season, Webster has endured his fair share of rocky outings, posting a 1-1 record with a 6.86 ERA over 21.0 big league innings pitched. Sunday will mark his fifth start of the season.

Taking Webster’s place in Reno will be Jhoulys Chacin who is fresh off a strong performance in Saturday’s 3-2 loss to the Athletics in which he scattered five hits and two earned runs over seven innings, striking out six and earning a no-decision.

According to D-backs manager Chip Hale, Chacin’s stay in Reno is expected to be brief.

“We optioned Chacin back to Triple-A and he’ll rejoin us,” Hale said. “He’ll start once down there and then he’ll pitch for us in September.”

Sunday’s first pitch versus Oakland is scheduled for 1:10 p.m.
