Diamondbacks recall RHP Andrew Hoffmann, option Austin Pope

SAN DIEGO — The Arizona Diamondbacks recalled rookie right-handed relief pitcher Andrew Hoffmann on Friday before first pitch against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.

The club opened a roster spot by optioning right-hander Austin Pope after his MLB debut on Thursday.

Pope threw 36 pitches on Thursday in two scoreless innings, but the Diamondbacks needed a fresh arm. Arizona designated Nabil Crismatt for assignment and recalled Bryce Jarvis earlier on Friday.

Hoffmann was delayed in joining the team due to travel complications caused by storms in Phoenix.

The 25-year-old’s last MLB appearance was on Aug. 19 before he was optioned to Triple-A Reno and shut down with posterior elbow discomfort.

His last minor league appearance was on Sept. 4, but he had started throwing again at Salt River Fields.

Hoffmann, a trade deadline acquisition from the Kansas City Royals for Randal Grichuk, threw 6.1 MLB innings before getting optioned. His first three outings were scoreless, but he allowed six earned runs over his next four.
