Arizona Diamondbacks yield season-high run total as Rockies roll: By The Numbers

As dismal as the Arizona Diamondbacks’ 2014 season has been, they hadn’t given up an embarrassing amount of runs in a single game — until Friday night, that is.

The equally awful Colorado Rockies beat up starting pitcher Chase Anderson and a trio of relievers on Friday en route to a 15-3 demolition of the D-backs (62-92) in Denver.

Arizona’s previous season-high for runs allowed in a game were in a pair of 12-2 losses — to the Rockies on April 4 and the Kansas City Royals on Aug. 5.

It was a measure of payback for the Rockies (63-91), who yielded 16, 14, and 12 runs to the D-backs in earlier contests this season.

Outfielder Michael Cuddyer accounted for nearly half of the Rockies’ runs with a career-high seven RBI, including a sixth-inning grand slam off reliever Eury De La Rosa.

Anderson (9-7) struggled against the Rockies for the first time in four starts this season, allowing six earned runs off nine hits in five innings pitched, as the D-backs lost their fourth straight game.

Here’s how the Rockies ran up the score on Arizona on Friday night, by the numbers:

1

Anderson allowed one more earned run on Friday (six) than in his previous three combined starts (five), including Aug. 31 in a 6-2 home win against the Rockies.

1.50

Anderson’s ERA was 1.50 in his previous three starts vs. Colorado. He was the winning pitcher in all of those games — two in Phoenix, one in Denver.

3

D-backs catcher Miguel Montero recorded a base hit in the first inning, but it was just his third hit in his last 11 games.

5

With his 1-for-4 performance on Friday, Arizona outfielder A.J. Pollock has a five-game hitting streak. Pollock’s season batting average is .310, but he came into Friday’s game hitting .192 (5 of 26) vs. the Rockies this season.

7

D-backs infielder Jake Lamb has hit safely in each of his last seven starts. He went 2-for-4 with a run scored on Friday.

8

The D-backs now have eight stretches this season with at least four consecutive losses.

9

Arizona managed just two earned runs off Rockies starting pitcher Jordan Lyles (7-3) despite recording nine hits during his six innings of work. The D-backs have scored just five earned runs off Lyles in 16 innings this season.

105

With five strikeouts on Friday, Anderson now has 105 on the season — two behind Josh Collmenter for second-highest on the team. (Wade Miley’s 173 are best.)
