Diamondbacks call up 1B Tyler Locklear from Triple-A Reno

The Arizona Diamondbacks are recalling first baseman Tyler Locklear from Triple-A Reno.

Locklear will be taking the roster spot previously occupied by outfielder Tommy Troy, who was placed on the 10-day injured list on Wednesday with a sprained right AC joint.

Acquired by the Diamondbacks last season in a trade package from the Seattle Mariners for third baseman Eugenio Suarez, Locklear appeared in 31 games with Arizona, slashing .175/.267/.272 with three home runs and six RBIs.

Locklear went on the injured list in September with left elbow inflammation following a collision at first base. The collision occurred after an errant throw from Jordan Lawlar took Locklear into base runner Connor Wong in a game against the Boston Red Sox.  

Locklear underwent shoulder and elbow surgeries during the offseason.

After starting the season on the injured list, Locklear was activated from the 10-day IL in May and sent down to Reno. In 57 games with the Aces, Locklear has been on a tear at the plate, slashing .309/.390/.491 with eight home runs and 37 RBIs. He was recently named PCL Player of the Week after hitting five home runs and driving in 11 RBIs last week.

The news on Locklear comes as the D-backs have been looking for more production at the plate from their first basemen. Arizona has seen several players start at first base this season, including Carlos Santana, Pavin Smith, Ildemaro Vargas and Tim Tawa, but none of them have produced consistently enough to earn the full-time job. Santana and Smith were both designated for assignment.

Tawa is the most recent player to get starts at first base and had a productive series against the Los Angeles Dodgers before the All-Star break, going 7-for-13 with two home runs and seven RBIs.
