Diamondbacks CEO: recently waived Eugenio Suarez is ‘a fit anywhere’

It didn’t take long to connect the dots back to the Arizona Diamondbacks after the Cincinnati Reds waived third baseman and designated hitter Eugenio Suarez on Wednesday.

With the Diamondbacks fighting for a National League Wild Card spot and only a year removed from Suarez’s memorable Arizona stint, why not bring the third baseman back to the desert for a final push?

Given the impact he had on the franchise during his two seasons with the team before being traded last year, it wouldn’t be all that shocking, especially given D-backs president and CEO Derrick Hall’s feelings about the slugger.

“You have to find a fit anytime you’re making a move this time of year, yet it just feels like Geno fits any team,” Hall told Arizona Sports’ Bickley & Marotta on Thursday. “It was so painful last year trading him. He wasn’t here very long but he is one of the most popular players we’ve ever had.

“This guy is for real. He’s lovable. He’s so fantastic and he’s such a good teammate and good culture guy. I do believe, whether it’s us or any team that is in contention right now, he’s going to make a difference at some point. He’s got that slug, he’s that threat on deck, he can DH, he can play third for a lot of teams. … I think he’s a fit anywhere and he certainly was a fit here. When you say that name, I smile. That’s all I can say at this point.”

How would Eugenio Suarez fit with the 2026 Diamondbacks?

While Hall loves the guy, Eugenio’s season totals are a reason Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro thinks an Arizona reunion with Suarez is unlikely.

His numbers are a big reason behind the Reds’ decision to move on.

In 103 games with the Reds this season, Suarez is slashing .208/.295/.410 with a .705 OPS. He’s recorded 57 RBIs and 41 walks to 143 strikeouts. Nineteen of Suarez’s 75 hits have been home runs.

He did, however, play a vital role in the Reds’ comeback win over the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday with a ninth-inning grand slam.

Suarez is looking better in the month of August, too. He’s slashing .237/.362/.500 with a .862 OPS and has 18 hits (five homers), 18 RBIs and 13 walks to 28 strikeouts.

And despite working primarily as Arizona’s starting third baseman during his 264 games played for the Diamondbacks from 2024-25, Suarez wouldn’t have the same role given the addition of Nolan Arenado this offseason.

Third base is locked down.

Instead, Saurez would likely serve as Arizona’s designated hitter, something he did across just seven games during his D-backs tenure.

Stats and position aside, Suarez would bring a trusted leader in Arizona’s clubhouse. With all the drama that has surrounded Ketel Marte and the organization, plus the second baseman’s expected return next Monday for the team’s series against the Philadelphia Phillies, having a guy like Suarez around wouldn’t hurt.
