Diamondbacks release spring training schedule ahead of potential MLB lockout

Major League Baseball has released the 2027 spring training schedules for all 30 teams despite uncertainty surrounding next season’s status due to upcoming Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) negotiations.

Although it is certainly premature to lock any plans in now, the Diamondbacks are currently set to open their 2027 spring training games slate on Feb. 19 in split-squad action against the Colorado Rockies (home) and San Francisco Giants (away), and end on March 21 at home against the San Diego Padres.

However, that schedule could quickly become obsolete depending on what comes out of what’s been a contentious bargaining period between the league and MLBPA with the current CBA expiring on Dec. 1.

Key issues being addressed in negotiations include the possibility of introducing a salary cap and/or salary floor, limiting contract lengths and eliminating the ability for teams to “defer money” in player contracts.

Owners want to eliminate the massive spending disparity that hurts the league’s competitive balance, while players want to be paid sooner and not have their earnings suppressed. The conflicting nature of each side’s desires may lead to a lockout ahead of the 2027 season.

The last time MLB went into a lockout was after the 2021 season due to similar reasons. It lasted 99 days before a new CBA was agreed to on March 10, 2022.

If a lockout does happen, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale suggests that spring training games could be delayed into early May, assuming negotiations go well. After the 2021-22 lockout, spring training games began March 17 and ended on April 6, with a full 162-game season played afterwards.
