Diamondbacks send Ryan Thompson to IL, recall Philip Abner

The Arizona Diamondbacks sent reliever Ryan Thompson to the injured list and recalled lefty reliever Philip Abner from Triple-A Reno on Wednesday. The team also optioned Adrian Del Castillo to Triple-A and reinstated fellow catcher Gabriel Moreno from the paternity list.

Thompson last pitched in Tuesday’s loss to the San Diego Padres and goes to the 15-day injured list with a strained lower back.

He surrendered one run on three hits and a walk in 0.1 innings after he entered during the seventh inning facing a 7-0 deficit.

The 34-year-old had his fair share of struggles in July. His final appearance last month saw him cough up three earned runs on four hits and a walk in 0.2 innings. That outing in Pittsburgh saw his ERA for the month balloon to 9.00 across 10 innings pitched.

In 46 appearances this season, Thompson has a 4.43 ERA and 1.57 WHIP.

In a corresponding roster move, Abner was recalled from Triple-A. Abner returns to the big leagues after being optioned to Reno on July 20.

The left-handed reliever has split time between the majors and Triple-A this season and holds a 5.01 ERA and 1.24 WHIP in 32.1 innings with the Aces. Abner has pitched 9.1 innings at the big-league level this season and holds a 6.75 ERA and 1.50 WHIP. He has struck out five and walked six batters.

The 24-year-old has pitched in five games for the Diamondbacks in each of the past two seasons.
