PHOENIX — Not quite every part of the Arizona Diamondbacks’ 25th anniversary celebration for the 2001 World Series went off without a hitch on Saturday, but an unforeseen issue during the National Anthem made for a more unforgettable moment.

Accomplished trumpeter Dr. Jesse McGuire forever etched his name in Valley sports lore by performing the “Star-Spangled Banner” ahead of Game 7 of the 2001 World Series, the the Diamondbacks brought him back for the reunion on Saturday.

His rendition began as it normally would, but then he appeared to struggle with the instrument.

Instead of panicking, McGuire grabbed the microphone, trumpet still in hand, and sang the rest of the Anthem, showing off a singing voice worthy of the occasion. The crowd immediately acknowledged the effort and gave him a rousing ovation.

McGuire tossed his trumpet onto the ground, gave Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo a hug and beat his chest after the final note.

He later sang “God Bless America” during the Seventh-Inning Stretch, and the Diamondbacks walked off the New York Yankees just like that November night 25 years ago.
