Geraldo Perdomo removed from Diamondbacks-Rockies game with knee soreness

PHOENIX — Arizona Diamondbacks shortstop Geraldo Perdomo left Monday’s game against the Colorado Rockies after the fourth inning with left knee soreness, and his status for Tuesday is “50-50,” according to manager Torey Lovullo.

The issues stemmed from Perdomo running down the first-base line on Sunday against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Diamondbacks were up 7-0 at the time of his exit versus Colorado, and Lovullo and Perdomo both said he would have likely remained in the game if the score was close.

Perdomo will not need imaging.

“We might give him a rest tomorrow or the next day, and we know we have an off day on Thursday, but he should be fine,” Lovullo said. “He woke up a little stiff today, so we were gonna take it easy on him for the rest of those five innings that he was out of the ballgame and just see how he feels through the night and tomorrow.”

“I told (Lovullo) if I feel better tomorrow, I definitely can play,” Perdomo said. “But if not, we’ll see what he’s going to decide.”

Ildemaro Vargas replaced Perdomo at shortstop. Perdomo was 0-for-2 with a walk at that point and had made a highlight leaping throw to record an out at second base.

Perdomo said the jump did not make his knee feel worse, but it did put in his mind that he should not risk exacerbating the issue if he didn’t have to.

The last time Perdomo missed a game was on July 8, and he had played every inning since then. He has played more innings at shortstop (1,014) than anyone else in Major League Baseball this season.

At the plate, Perdomo had been heating up with an .827 OPS since the All-Star break and .952 OPS over his previous 14 games, entering Monday.
