Get-right Giants: Diamondbacks hold on to extend season-long win streak over San Francisco

PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks needed a get-right game after a lifeless three-game sweep at the Tampa Bay Rays over the weekend, and Monday provided the right recipe for it.

With staff ace Eduardo Rodriguez delivering another quality start, the Diamondbacks continued their season-long dominance over the San Francisco Giants, 5-4. Arizona improved to 7-0 against San Francisco this season after a pair of sweeps in May.

The Giants made the game interesting late with a pair of runs off D-backs closer Paul Sewald in the ninth inning, but Matt Chapman popped out to end the rally.

The Diamondbacks returned to .500 at 42-42.

It is the first time the Diamondbacks have won seven straight games against a division opponent to open a season, according to the team.

Geraldo Perdomo comes through in clutch spot

Arizona started early, with Ketel Marte taking Giants starter Tyler Mahle yard to lead-off the first inning. Marte moved into a tie for second in Diamondbacks history with 1,182 hits (Paul Goldschmidt).

The big knock came via Geraldo Perdomo, a clutch hitter throughout his career who has not enjoyed the same success with runners aboard this year. He entered Monday hitting .167 with runners in scoring position after he hit .333 in 2025.

Perdomo worked a 3-1 count and came up with a hit the D-backs have been looking for since Wednesday in St. Louis. He roped a double to left field off left-hander Sam Hentges to clear the bases and give Arizona breathing room up 4-1 in the fifth inning.

“Huge inning,” Perdomo said. “We haven’t done our job with runners in scoring position. Today was a different day. I think we were ready for taking those opportunities.”

The D-backs built that inning with two walks and an opposite-field single from Tommy Troy. The D-backs only collected six hits but created some traffic with six walks.

Nolan Arenado, a career Giants killer, smoked his first home run since June 1. It was his 36th career home run against the Giants, the most among active players. The last player to hit at least 36 home runs against San Francisco was George Foster, whose last season was in 1986.

Arenado reached base three times on Monday with two hits.

The top three of Marte, Perdomo and Corbin Carroll reached base six times, including four walks.

Eduardo Rodriguez continues to show why he should be an All-Star

Rodriguez was not at his best on Monday and still managed to throw seven innings with one earned run, which scored on a squeeze from Jonah Cox — even on that play, first baseman Pavin Smith fielded the ball with seemingly enough time to throw out Victor Bericoto at home, but his execution was too slow.

The lefty struck out one batter, a season low, but he did not walk anyone, either. Unlike Zac Gallen’s start on Friday with no strikeouts and one whiff, Rodriguez drew 11 swings-and-misses on Monday. Plus, he only gave up five hits, four of which were singles.

“No walks today, that’s perfect,” Rodriguez said. “I always want strikeouts, but I still went seven out there. … We were getting quick outs, so that’s all that matters. I know strikeouts matter, but I think it matters more when you go out there and execute everything and put the team in a good position to win.”

It was the 12th start in franchise history of seven-plus innings, one or fewer runs and one or fewer strikeouts, per Stathead. Braden Shipley was the last to do so in 2016, and this is not the list you’ll find Randy Johnson or Curt Schilling on.

With outfielders tracking down fly balls, Rodriguez lowered his ERA to 2.21, fifth among qualified starters.

The D-backs are 13-4 when he starts.

“On a night when we needed somebody to step up and give us a chance to catch our breath, E-Rod did everything we had hoped,” manager Torey Lovullo said. “We had a tough weekend in Tampa. We came home with a clear mind, the energy was good in the dugout pregame. E-Rod took it from there and gave our offense a chance to get grounded.”

Sewald, despite the bumps, recorded his 19th save in 20 tries.

Tuesday’s starters

Brandon Pfaadt will pitch for Arizona on Tuesday, Lovullo announced after Monday’s game. Pfaadt has spent most of this month in Triple-A Reno getting stretched back out after the D-backs put him in the bullpen in April.

San Francisco will go with right-hander Landen Roupp.

The Diamondbacks are 12-2 against the Giants and Colorado Rockies this year, and they have two more opportunities to build on that success without San Francisco’s top two starters Logan Webb and Robbie Ray lined up for this series.

“We came in here with a clear head after a tough weekend, and I wanted the guys to come out and play their best game,” Lovullo said. “We still have them, I don’t know, is it five more times (six)? I’m not going to take anything for granted.”
