Ketel Marte named finalist for MLB All-Star Game after Phase 1 of voting

Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte was named a finalist for the MLB All-Star Game after Phase 1 of voting ended Thursday.

Marte led all National League second basemen with 2,534,002 votes, placing ahead of Los Angeles Dodgers second baseman Tommy Edman, who received 1,868,693 votes.

The top overall vote getters in the American and National League, the New York Yankees’ Aaron Judge with 4,012,983 total votes and the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani with 3,967,668 votes, each earned an automatic starting spot in the All-Star game.

Phase 1 of voting ended on Thursday at 9 a.m., while Phase 2 begins on Monday at 9 a.m. Fans can vote once per day at MLB.com until Phase 2 ends on July 2 at 9 a.m.

Vote totals from Phase 1 will not carry over to Phase 2. The player with the most votes at each position, including three outfielders in the National League and the two remaining outfielders in the American League, will be revealed as All-Stars on July 2 at 4 p.m. during a special on ESPN.

Marte was the only Diamondbacks player to advance to Phase 2.

He is slashing .313/.416/.596 with 15 home runs and 32 RBIs this season.

He was voted as an All-Star by the fans last season and is aiming for his third All-Star appearance after first being selected in 2019.

If Marte makes the cut, he would become the first Diamondbacks player with three fan elections and would also become the first National League second baseman with consecutive fan selections since Chase Utley had five from 2006-10.
