Ketel Marte’s hot streak wins him NL Player of the Week

Ketel Marte appears to be back — and more. The Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman was named the National League Player of the Week thanks to the production during the stretch from May 18 to Sunday.

During that seven-game portion of his hitting streak, which heading into Tuesday night is at nine games, his season average jumped from .216 to .262.

The D-backs have been energized by the offensive production, going 6-1 in that span by averaging 5.9 runs per game (Arizona’s 4.62 runs per game for the season already ranked ninth in MLB).

Over the week stretch, Marte went 15-for- 28 (.536) with a 1.563 OPS thanks to four doubles, three home runs, 12 RBIs and a trio of walks.

He led MLB in average, OPS, RBIs, hits, slugging (1.000), extra-base hits (seven), total bases (28) and runs (11). 

Five of his seven games were multi-hit performances, and three were three-hit outings. He went 30 straight plate appearances without a strikeout and had just one on Sunday, the last day of the week the MLB awards account for.

The American League gave its weekly honor to Boston Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras (.458 average, 1.355 OPS, four extra-base hits and eight RBIs).
