Diamondbacks OF Lourdes Gurriel Jr. carted off field vs. Rangers

PHOENIX — Arizona Diamondbacks left fielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. was carted off the field during Monday’s game against the Texas Rangers at Chase Field with a right knee injury.

Gurriel hit the floor after getting out of the way of Blaze Alexander — starting his first game in center field — making a diving catch in the left-center field gap.

Gurriel stayed down a while holding his right leg while teammates ran out to support him and called for the trainer.

Gurriel stood up after several minutes and gingerly walked on his own power to his seat on the cart. He held his head in his hands as the cart took him out of the field of play.

“He is set up for imaging tomorrow,” manager Torey Lovullo said postgame.

“Say some prayers for him tonight. It’s a situation where we’re gonna hope for the best. I don’t think it looks great, but before I’m gonna speculate, I’ll just park it in neutral for 24 hours or until I see you guys tomorrow and hopefully we get the best news possible. But it doesn’t look great.”

Outfielder Jorge Barrosa, recalled from Triple-A Reno on Monday, took his spot in the batting order.

“ Looked to me like he planted that right foot to get out of the way,” Lovullo explained. “They were both closing in on the ball … Blaze started to call it, but he wasn’t calling it until he knew he had it. I think they were both going after it and getting ready to call it. Gurriel heard it and he tried to peel out of the way, and I think that’s what ended up happening.”

Gurriel has been Arizona’s cleanup hitter since the trade deadline, and he went on a nice run in August. Over his last 15 games entering Monday, he hit .286 with four home runs and 18 RBIs. Only Kyle Schwarber drove in more than Gurriel’s 32 RBIs in August with 33.

The Diamondbacks tried Alexander out in center field for the first time in a major league game after he received experience in Triple-A out there. Arizona’s outfield depth includes Corbin Carroll, Jake McCarthy, Alek Thomas, Barrosa and Alexander.

Lovullo said Alexander would start in center field again on Tuesday.
