Major League Baseball teams can expand their active rosters to 28 players in September, so the Arizona Diamondbacks reinstated reliever Ryan Thompson from the injured list and recalled outfielder Jorge Barrosa on Monday.

Thompson returns from a scapular strain that kept him out since July 4, as he adds needed depth to the bullpen. Thompson made two rehab appearances in Triple-A Reno after having gone down during his best stretch of the year.

He threw seven straight scoreless outings before hitting the IL, lowering his season ERA to 4.45.

Barrosa returns for a third time this season from Triple-A Reno, providing plus defense in the outfield and speed. He has not hit well in the major leagues at 4-for-36 this season (.111).

In Triple-A, Barrosa has slashed .294/.378/.431 with seven home runs and 10 steals this year.

He is a switch-hitter, giving the D-backs a right-handed option during a week when they will face multiple left-handed starting pitchers.

Long gone are the days when clubs could bring up their entire 40-man rosters. Teams can roster up to 14 pitchers, which the Diamondbacks have done with Monday’s moves.

The Diamondbacks begin their September slate on Monday against the Texas Rangers at Chase Field.

First pitch is at 5:10 p.m. MST on 98.7 and the Arizona Sports app.
