Diamondbacks place Lourdes Gurriel Jr. on injured list again

PHOENIX — In a pregame surprise on Saturday, the Arizona Diamondbacks placed veteran left fielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. on the 10-day injured list with a right adductor strain.

In his place, the Diamondbacks recalled catcher/designated hitter Adrian Del Castillo from Triple-A Reno. They also selected the contract of reliever Gerardo Carrillo and optioned him to Reno, suggesting there could be plans to use him in the near future.

Manager Torey Lovullo said the Diamondbacks are hoping Gurriel’s IL stint will be the minimum 10 days.

Gurriel has gone through an injury-marred and frustrating season. He came back quicker than expected from a torn right ACL he suffered last September, returning on April 18. He went back on the IL with a strained left hamstring on May 23 and came back on June 15.

Since then, Gurriel has hit .183 with one home run in 22 games played.

“I think he had a little bit of an issue there in Dodger Stadium,” Lovullo said. “Tried to play yesterday. Got some imaging this morning. … It’s just above his knee on the inside part of his thigh. We just thought to give him a little bit of a blow, heal that thing up.”

Lovullo referred to an at-bat on Sunday at Dodger Stadium when Gurriel looked to struggle getting out of the batter’s box after a swing.

The Diamondbacks’ outfield has dealt with numerous injuries this season, as Gurriel joins center fielders Tommy Troy and Jordan Lawlar on the IL.

Arizona’s active roster includes outfielders Corbin Carroll, Ryan Waldschmidt, Max Kepler and Jorge Barrosa, with utility man Tim Tawa set up to play out there, as well.

Del Castillo comes back after he hit .185 in 51 games for the D-backs earlier this season. Del Castillo was optioned on July 6 and has since crushed the ball in Reno with two home runs and five doubles in six games.

Carrillo is a right-hander relief pitcher who signed a minor league deal with the Diamondbacks last offseason. The 27-year-old has yet to make his MLB debut, but he stood out in spring training with an upper-90s mph heater.

Carrillo owns a 4.25 ERA in 42.1 innings with the Aces this season, striking out 56 batters with 27 walks.

The 40-man roster sits at 40 players.
