Lourdes Gurriel Jr. snatches home run away from Brewers’ Garrett Mitchell

PHOENIX — Arizona Diamondbacks left fielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. timed his leap perfectly to rob Milwaukee Brewers hitter Garrett Mitchell of a game-changing home run at Chase Field on Friday night.

Gurriel twisted his body mid-air and slammed his chest against the wall, coming down with what looked like a back-breaking three-run home run in the third inning.

The catch saved the game from getting out of hand, as the Brewers took an early 3-0 lead against D-backs starter Jose Cabrera. Mitchell punched a sinker the other way, and after Gurriel’s heroics, Cabrera got out of the inning with two base runners left stranded, still down three runs.

“It was a good play, more so because it kept us in the game at that time. … From the jump I knew I had a chance,” Gurriel told Arizona Sports via Spanish interpreter.

Arizona responded immediately, plating three runs in the bottom half of the inning to flip a potential 6-0 deficit into anyone’s ballgame. The D-backs also chased Brewers starter Kyle Harrison.

The game ended up going to 11 innings, but the Diamondbacks lost, 7-4. Arizona made several key defensive plays, but a throwing error from pitcher Ryan Thompson allowed two runs to score in the 11th inning.
