Nolan Arenado scratched from Diamondbacks lineup vs. Giants

Third baseman Nolan Arenado was scratched from the Arizona Diamondbacks lineup Thursday, less than an hour before first pitch against the San Francisco Giants.

Arenado was dealing with left thumb inflammation, according to MLB.com’s Steve Gilbert.

Jose Fernandez replaced Arenado in the lineup, batting seventh.

The thumb inflammation is separate from the trunk discomfort that held the D-backs’ third baseman out of the first two games against the Boston Red Sox earlier this month (Aug. 17-18).

The Diamondbacks‘ starting lineup with Fernandez replacing Arenado for Thursday’s series opener against the Giants read as follows:
