Diamondbacks get OF Jordan Lawlar back from injured list

The Arizona Diamondbacks reinstated outfielder Jordan Lawlar from the 60-day injured list on Friday ahead of their series opener against the Cincinnati Reds.

The team also said it designated backup catcher Aramis Garcia for assignment, freeing a 40-man roster spot as the D-backs expect more reinforcements to follow in the coming weeks.

Lawlar is set to play in his first major league game since April 2, when he suffered a broken right wrist on a hit-by-pitch against the Atlanta Braves. He hit his first MLB home run earlier in that game.

The 23-year-old has actually played more rehab games this season than he had games with the Diamondbacks before his injury (eight). He only played in six games when the injury occurred, during which he hit .333 while making some standout plays in the outfield.

During his rehab, Lawlar has split time between the Arizona Complex League and the Triple-A Reno Aces, playing left and center field. Lawlar moved from the infield to the outfield this past offseason to fill a need on the Diamondbacks’ roster.

The D-backs have shuffled their outfield this season due to injuries and performance, moving off Alek Thomas, calling up prospects Ryan Waldschmidt and Tommy Troy, along with getting Lourdes Gurriel Jr. back from the injured list and losing him to a hamstring strain.

Gurriel is on a rehab assignment as he nears a return, as well.

Friday’s game will feature a pitching matchup of Arizona left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez versus Cincinnati southpaw Nick Lodolo. The game’s television broadcast is exclusive to Apple TV.

First pitch on Friday is at 4:15 p.m. MST on 98.7 and the Arizona Sports app.
