X-rays negative for Diamondbacks OF Ryan Waldschmidt after scare vs. Dodgers

LOS ANGELES — Arizona Diamondbacks center fielder and top prospect Ryan Waldschmidt left Friday’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers with the athletic trainer, but he received relieving news afterward.

Waldschmidt attempted to bunt against Dodgers pitcher Edgardo Henriquez during the sixth inning, but the pitch sailed high and tight and hit Waldschmidt on his right thumb. The pitch was a 99.6 mph sinker, and the Diamondbacks replaced Waldschmidt with Jorge Barrosa without much deliberation.

Manager Torey Lovullo said that Waldschmidt’s X-rays came back negative.

“He’s got a right thumb contusion, right on the tip of his finger,” Lovullo said.

“Honestly, I feel pretty good,” Waldschmidt said. “I’m hoping tomorrow morning to get some more good news, and then hopefully swelling will be down and I’ll be back in there as soon as possible.”

Waldschmidt said he saw an opening on the right side of the infield and wanted to push a bunt to try reaching base. He struck out in his first two at-bats, so this was his way to push the envelope against a struggling defense.

“Just tried to have a firm grip on it and be able to push the ball pretty hard past the pitcher,” Waldschmidt said. “It would have been a base hit. But he throws 100, he throws it inside. … I was glad I was able to kind of rotate my hand.”

The Diamondbacks won the game, 9-3.

Friday was Waldschmidt’s first game since being recalled from Triple-A Reno as the corresponding move for designating first baseman Pavin Smith for assignment.

Waldschmidt was up with the big league club earlier this season, starting hot before the league made its adjustments. Arizona sent him back down to further develop, and he came back up confident he could better execute his plan.
