Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Ryne Nelson has a partially torn forearm flexor, Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro first reported on Friday.
Nelson most recently pitched on Monday and gave up two earned runs across seven innings pitched. He struck out five and did not give up a walk. His turn in the rotation would’ve come around on Sunday for a series finale against the Minnesota Twins.
Yilber Diaz, a 25-year-old right-hander with eight career games in the majors, was called up to fill Nelson’s spot on the roster, the team announced.
Arizona called Nelson’s injury a right elbow strain and placed him on the 15-day injured list retroactive to Monday, making him eligible to come off it at the start of July.
Nelson is third among Diamondbacks starters in ERA (4.97) and has averaged 6.5 innings per start over his last eight, one of their most consistent at getting deep into games.
Diaz had one-inning appearances for Triple-A Reno on Tuesday and Sunday, surrendering one run on Sunday and none on Tuesday. He has pitched at least two innings in four appearances this season and not since May 23.
The D-backs open the series with the Twins at 6:45 p.m. MST on Friday. Catch the action on 98.7 or the Arizona Sports app.

Diamondbacks need a new Physical therapy Guru?
Another injury - DBs are looking forward to the AS break.
And another thing:
Ryan Thompson did a good thing with his interview with regard to commenting on players writing a scripture on the alternate hats the other day in SF.
MLB has no business in giving Players this "optional" hat night, when this is an interruption of a Team sport by politicizing a part of the uniform that isn't baseball or country related. It forces Players and Fans into reacting and taking a view to it - Why do it? MLB (DB front office included) should be ashamed.
Why Yilber Diaz? His numbers are poor...4.50 ERA at Reno which is like 6.0+ ERA in the majors. He had a 9.00 ERA with the Dbacks last season.
Question: Is it going to be a bullpen game on Sunday?
Question: Pfaadt isn't ready? Nor other starters at Reno that can fill in for Nelson?
These are good questions to ask.
