D-backs’ Eugenio Suarez’s magical 4-home run game spoiled in loss to Braves

The refrain, “We know it’s Geno,” never rang so true — and so many times — than it did on Saturday night.

Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez put his recent struggles firmly behind him by hitting four home runs against the Atlanta Braves. The one-man-show heroics, however, ended in an 8-7 extra-inning loss.

Suarez reached ten bombs on the season when his fourth left the yard at Chase Field. His first three rocketed off the arm of Braves right-hander Grant Holmes.

The 383-foot shot to left field meant Suarez also had his first career game with four home runs. It tied things up at 7-7.

Former Diamondback J.D. Martinez recorded the club’s only other four-homer game back on Sept. 4, 2017 against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Suarez became just the 19th player in MLB history to accomplish the power-hitting feat.

“I just want to glorify God with this game he gave me today,” Suarez said postgame. “I never thought it would happen. Today was a perfect today.”

The previously cold Suarez — only two home runs in his last 23 games — sent a jolt into a similarly lulling Arizona offense only averaging 3.67 runs per game since playing the Cubs last Friday.

Besides Suarez, catcher Gabriel Moreno and center fielder Alek Thomas (two hits) were the only other Arizona players to record a hit.

D-backs Saturday starter Merrill Kelly got through six innings while allowing four hits and two earned runs (both home runs). He struck out four Atlanta batters and orchestrated consecutive 1-2-3 frames before handing the ball over to manager Torey Lovullo.

The Arizona bullpen didn’t have its finest night, conceding six runs (five earned) after Kelly’s exit. Ryan Thompson gave up a pair in the seventh before the steady southpaw Jalen Beeks let three runs come home in the eighth.

Flamethrowing Justin Martinez allowed the Braves ghost runner Matt Olson to score in the 10th frame on a wild pitch. He walked one and recorded three outs on 10 pitches.

As a unit, it was Arizona’s fifth blown save in the last eight attempts.

Diamondbacks next game

Arizona (14-13) will shift its focus and four-game losing skid to the Sunday series finale against Atlanta (12-14).

D-backs probable Brandon Pfaadt (4-1, 2.73 ERA) will face Braves righty Spencer Schwellenbach (1-1, 2.56 ERA) on the bump.

Pfaadt leads the club in wins, ERA, earned runs (nine) and is tied for first in quality starts (three with Kelly who has had one more start).
