Diamondbacks call up Tommy Troy, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. to IL

PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks are calling up highly-ranked prospect Tommy Troy and placing outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. on the 10-day injured list (strained hamstring).

Gurriel injured his left hamstring on a sliding catch during Friday’s 3-2 loss to the Colorado Rockies, and he underwent further imaging on Saturday.

The 40-man roster is at 40 players after the selection of Troy’s contract.

Troy, an infielder who has received outfield reps over the past couple seasons, will come up for his MLB debut to fill the void during an opportunistic stretch of the team’s schedule.

The Diamondbacks drafted Troy with the No. 12 overall pick in the first round of the 2023 MLB Draft out of Stanford.

The 5-foot-9, right-handed hitter has played 18 games at second base, 18 games in left field and seven games in center field this season. Improving his versatility was a strategy to set him up to contribute to the Diamondbacks sooner with an infield already manned by Ketel Marte, Geraldo Perdomo and Nolan Arenado.

Troy, 24, has been an on-base machine over the past couple seasons, hitting .307 with a .397 on-base clip this year for Triple-A Reno. He has also contributed 10 doubles, three triples, three home runs and six stolen bases, showing off bat-to-ball skills with some pop and plus speed. He hit 15 home runs with 24 stolen bases in 2025.

He works his walks (12.7%) and limits chase, although his strikeout rate (24%) this year has been higher than normal. His walk and strikeout rates are nearly identical to where top prospect Ryan Waldschmidt’s were in Triple-A before he was called up earlier this month.

MLB Pipeline has Troy ranked No. 4 in the Diamondbacks’ farm system. Before the season, FanGraphs ranked him No. 2 in the system, and The Athletic’s Keith Law had him No. 11.

D-backs farm director Chris Slivka to Arizona Sports on May 9:

“He’s done a great job, hitting .300, getting on base. The strikeouts are a little high, but he’s going to continue to adjust that level. We anticipate him continuing to trend upwards as the season progresses. But he’s been doing a really good job. I think that the improvements he’s made since last year at second base are pretty stark. He just needs to get more reps in the outfield to gain more comfort out there, and we’re going to give him those.”

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. on the IL, and what comes next

This is a tough break for Gurriel, who worked all offseason to return from a torn ACL on Sept. 1, 2025, to miss less than a month of action in 2026. He came back on April 18, and while he has mostly struggled since then, Gurriel has been trending upward.

The veteran has hit .300 with two doubles and a home run in his last eight games.

Troy can help fill in as the left fielder, while the D-backs have versatile options off the bench such as Jorge Barrosa and Tim Tawa.

Ildemaro Vargas has limited experience in left field but has played there on occasion. Moving Vargas to the outfield could open first base for rookie Jose Fernandez, who has not received consistent playing time as he has cooled off in May.

Outfielder Jordan Lawlar is working his way back off the 60-day injured list (broken wrist). He is not eligible to return until early June, but he has made progress after receiving good news on his latest CT scan.

“I think it’s a little bit of cage (batting practice), some cage flips, just to build up some of the hand strength,” manager Torey Lovullo said of Lawlar on Thursday. “He’s in a really good sequence and feeling good. I talked to him yesterday in the dugout for a few minutes, and he’s just very encouraged by the work that he’s able to put in right now.”

How the Diamondbacks adjust the roster when he and first baseman Pavin Smith return will be a tricky puzzle, especially with the 40-man roster filled up.
