Torey Lovullo: Diamondbacks frustrated with postponed game vs. Cardinals after clear weather warnings

A friend of Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo sent him a dubious weather report for Thursday’s game back on Tuesday, and Lovullo connected with the front office to see if something could be done.

Fast forward to Thursday evening, and the Diamondbacks were leaving Busch Stadium after their game against the St. Louis Cardinals was rained out, causing an inconvenient rescheduling.

The game will be played at Busch Stadium on July 23, on what would have been an off day for the D-backs before a nine-game, three-city road trip.

How this all unfolded caused some frustration from the Diamondbacks’ side.

“I think calls were made in all directions from our part,” Lovullo told Arizona Sports’ Burns & Gambo. “And I don’t know where it went. It’s well beyond my pay grade. But I know that the questions were asked and it just really didn’t seem to go anywhere.”

“I don’t want to clown the Cardinals or Major League Baseball,” he added. “They work really hard at it, but I think there were a bunch of weather models that told us the story of the game potentially being played a little bit earlier. We could have completed and got on our way down to Tampa, but look, I trust the system. I trust the reasons why. It wasn’t super clean. It was a little bit frustrating for us on a lot of different levels.”

The weather during the day in St. Louis provided a window. Arizona has already played games that were moved up in the day due to weather this season.

Two games between the D-backs and New York Mets at Citi Field were pushed forward due to cold and windy conditions back in April. Recently, the San Francisco Giants announced that they will play a doubleheader against the Diamondbacks at Oracle Park on Aug. 29 so that they would not play 23 days in a row after having a different game rescheduled.

Lovullo said the D-backs did not have much of a say in the doubleheader arrangement.

Diamondbacks closer Paul Sewald provided the player perspective, criticizing the Cardinals specifically:

He was not alone in that sentiment:

Rescheduling games is not the easiest process, especially on a couple days notice, as there are thousands of fans that it affects.

The Mets repaid fans for their flexibility at the time with complimentary tickets subject to availability and ticket vouchers for fans who could not come to the rescheduled game.

Be that as it may, the Diamondbacks are going to have to deal with a grueling trip from Chase Field to St. Louis, Washington and Cleveland. There is a day off between the Pittsburgh and Cleveland series, although the D-backs will play 13 days in a row after that.
