LOS ANGELES — The Arizona Diamondbacks officially placed starting pitcher Zac Gallen on the 15-day injured list with right elbow inflammation after manager Torey Lovullo said the move was likely on Saturday.
The IL designation is retroactive to July 9, and in Gallen’s place, the D-backs recalled left-handed pitching prospect Mitch Bratt from Triple-A Reno.
Bratt will start Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, as Arizona will go for the three-game sweep entering the All-Star break.
Lovullo said Gallen was examined after his last start on Tuesday in San Diego and was sent back to Phoenix. He joins an injured list rotation that includes Corbin Burnes, Ryne Nelson, Michael Soroka, Cristian Mena and Blake Walston.
Bratt will get his second opportunity on a major league mound after making a spot start against the St. Louis Cardinals on June 24.
He only threw three innings that day, as he was still stretching back out after coming off the IL. He has thrown 67 and 57 pitches, respectively, over his last two starts in Triple-A.
Bratt has been the most effective starting pitcher in Reno this season with a 2.41 ERA in 13 starts. He does not throw hard, but he mixes speeds and has been an effective strike-thrower throughout his career.
Arizona acquired the southpaw in the Merrill Kelly trade last summer.
“We’re a little bit short with some starters, so it’ll be a nice opportunity for him,” Lovullo said.
Sunday’s game starts at 1:10 p.m. MST on 98.7 and the Arizona Sports app.

1. They should absolutely sign Gallen to a one year min deal. He is legit the worst pitcher this year so i doubt he'll get a better contract. Low risk, high reward.
2. Look at you! if he does return, guess who he going to Reno after all (for rehab starts!)
Prediction: Gallen is done for the season. The Dbacks will end up resigning him for another year with the plea of "I want to show the Dbacks organization and fans that I am not a has been." and the Dbacks front office will buy that line with a contract of deferred amount of $25M. We will watch the 2027 season with the same results from the 2025 and 2026 seasons.
Dbacks Hopium & Kool-Aid: They will push the narrative that the reason why Gallen is having a terrible 2026 season is this injury that finally came to the surface after his last start. Most of the local fans will drink the kool-aid and smoke the hopium pipe without thinking, "what was the excuse for the 2025 season" or if Gallen was hurting, why didn't he say something sooner?
Gallen can help us to win by not pitching. I am sorry but it is the truth.
Nice 2 wins in a row! Just a thought , how long do you go with a Number 3 hitter who has not hit a lick recently? It appears T L needs to either drop him or give him some bench time to regroup! Or maybe some of the fans are right , time to replace T L!
