ASU football converts fake punt for highlight play during Peach Bowl vs. Texas

Arizona State shocked Texas with a successful fake punt late in an otherwise tumultuous first half of the Peach Bowl on Wednesday. The 32-yard completion marked ASU’s longest play of the day at that point.

ASU faced fourth-and-nine from its own 21-yard line while trailing 17-3 with two minutes left in the half, and the Longhorns were set to receive the ball in the second half.

Head coach Kenny Dillingham pulled off a drastic measure, and freshman punter Kanyon Floyd rolled out to his right and hit open defensive lineman Blazen Lono-Woo for a big gain.

The Sun Devils successfully executed a fake punt earlier this season on a pass to edge rusher Clayton Smith against Kansas.

ASU marched down the field to set up a field-goal attempt, although the kick from Carston Kieffer was blocked by Ethan Burke.

Maintaining possession and bleeding the clock prevented Texas from scoring before the half, a small victory despite the two-possession deficit.

Special teams hurt the Sun Devils in the first half, as ASU allowed a 75-yard punt return for a touchdown and committed an offsides penalty as Texas attempted a field goal. Texas converted on fourth-and-two after the penalty.
