TEMPE — Arizona State star safety Xavion Alford will miss the game at Baylor on Saturday and potentially a “few weeks,” head coach Kenny Dillingham said on Wednesday.
Starting slot receiver Jalen Moss will also miss the game and has been sick despite being on track to recover from a foot injury, Dillingham added.
The coach added defensive back Montana Warren will be listed as “questionable at best” on the Big 12-mandated availability report that will first be released Wednesday night at 7 p.m. MST.
More about Arizona State injuries ahead of Baylor matchup
Dillingham said Wednesday’s practice was low energy, partially because of the uncertainty caused by the injuries, which are starting to accumulate in the secondary.
“We’ve got a bunch of guys dinged up right now and not going, so more guys got to step up and (we need) more communication, so not our best practice for sure,” Dillingham said.
Adrian “Boogie” Wilson stepped in for Alford against Texas State and earned one of the Big 12’s highest coverage grades for the week after the starter played around “70%” at Mississippi State.
Jack Bal, a redshirt sophomore who took 16 snaps in the opener against NAU, could be one of the reserve defensive backs who sees an increased workload as a result of Alford and Warren’s injuries.
On the other side of the ball, Moss’ absences have caused ASU to lean more on 12 personnel with more depth at tight end than wide receiver. It was one of the factors behind Chamon Metayer’s career-high six receptions against Texas State.
Catch ASU-Baylor at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday on the Arizona Sports app, ESPN 620 AM or 98.7 FM HD-2. It will be televised on FOX.
