ASU’s ice cold offense late in loss at Colorado continues trend of elusive Big 12 winning streak

Moe Odum fueled much of what went right for Arizona State men’s basketball on Saturday, but his 23 points weren’t enough in a 78-70 loss at Colorado.

Masssamba Diop was ASU’s only source of offense late, scoring its only five field goals in the final 11 minutes with Odum providing the assist on a few. Diop’s layup with 3:16 left that brought ASU within four points was its final make until he added another with 34 seconds left when it was too little, too late.

Colorado guard Barrington Hargress scored 12 of his 23 points in the second half.

Bobby Hurley is still seeking his first Big 12 winning streak since ASU (12-12, 3-8 Big 12) joined the conference in 2024-25.

An early 15-5 Colorado (14-10, 4-8) run gave the Buffaloes control, and it was solidified by a streak of nine straight ASU misses later in the half as a three-point deficit reached double digits.

Odum took a shot to the face to end the first half when he was running back on defense, had his head turned and didn’t see Colorado center Elijah Malone waiting for him when he turned back around.

The play netted ASU two free throws after entering the half down 39-31. Odum made one of the pair, and the sequence was enough to spark a 14-4 ASU run to open the half and take a lead.

It was the only lead of the second half for the Sun Devils, who were within one possession at three different points the rest of the way behind Odum’s shot-making, getting little support from the rest of the offense.

The Sun Devils played with an eight-man rotation, including a minutes restriction for Santiago Trouet, who was a game-time decision after missing Wednesday’s win at Utah.

Pig Johnson was the only Sun Devil off the bench to land in the scoring column, finishing with 14 points on 5 of 10 shooting while Trouet and Noah Meeusen combined to go 0 of 8.
