Bobby Hurley focused on present after Arizona State’s disappointing regular season

TEMPE — After Arizona State men’s basketball lost its fourth straight game to end a disappointing 2024-25 regular season, head coach Bobby Hurley was asked if he has thought about his future.

“I’m here getting ready for the Big 12 tournament,” Hurley said following his team’s 85-57 blowout loss to No. 9 Texas Tech. “And all those decisions are really out of my hands.”

When asked if he has talked to athletic director Graham Rossini about what’s to come after this season, Hurley declined to give any details on conversations the two have had.

“I would just say that I would prefer to not discuss really any conversations that we have right now,” he said.

Hurley is in his 10th season with ASU. He has led the program to three NCAA tournament appearances and last offseason landed highly-touted recruits such as Jayden Quaintance and Joson Sanon.

However, Hurley is just 168-149 with the Sun Devils, has never been beyond the Round of 64 in the tournament and has now had multiple teams fail to live up to preseason hype. In 2020-21, for example, the team was picked to finish second in the preseason Pac-12 media poll but went just 11-14.

His team has shown a willingness to play hard for him this season even as it’s been plagued with injuries and other absences, but Hurley noted the effort was less complete over the final two games of the regular season.

“I told the guys the one thing I’m disappointed with, and for the most part we have been battling through these games and giving ourselves a chance even though it hasn’t gone our way … but the last two games, like we turned Arizona over six times. Today, we turned (Texas Tech) over twice,” Hurley said. “Playing that many small, fast guys and not having great size, you gotta be able to be more disruptive.

“I don’t know if that’s not expending enough energy and now trying hard enough or what, but it’s really not acceptable defensively.”

The Sun Devils begin play in the Big 12 tournament next week and Hurley provided updates on key contributors who have been dealing with injuries.

Senior guard Adam Miller, who injured his hip against BYU on Feb. 26 and oblique against Arizona on Tuesday, has a good chance to play in the tournament.

“My guess is that Adam is going to play in the Big 12 tournament,” Hurley said. “We’re just going to look at him every day and he’s got to show me particularly by Monday  that he’s moving in a normal way because I’m not going to risk him getting further injured.”

Quaintance has been out since going down with what looked like a knee injury against BYU on Feb. 26.

Hurley was not confident the freshman will be available for the tournament.

“I don’t think he’s going to be ready by Tuesday so I wouldn’t expect to see him play … in Kansas City,” Hurley said.
