ASU’s Massamba Diop dunks after driving through open lane vs. West Virginia

TEMPE — Arizona State center Massamba Diop’s eyes lit up as the lane opened for a driving dunk early against West Virginia on Wednesday.

The drive gave him a chance to show off the light feet at 7-foot-1 that have helped him become a sleeper NBA Draft prospect, even if a longer-term one.

The dunk capped off a hot start for the Sun Devils that gave them an early 11-4 lead. ASU would go on to lose 75-63 as it ran out of steam in the second half.

The 30-point loss at Houston on Sunday was the first time Diop did not have at least 15 points since Dec. 6 (18 points per game on 69.6% shooting in eight contests during that span).

Diop had six points in the Houston loss, and the dunk he had early on Wednesday gave him six after just 4:22 of play. He finished with 14 points.

The young center entered Wednesday’s matchup second in the Big 12 for field-goal percentage on the year at 64% (Kansas’ Flory Bidunga leads at 65.9%).

He was also tied with Texas Tech’s JT Toppin for fourth in the conference in blocks per game (1.8), and he had two in Wednesday’s loss.
