Maurice Odum late 3-pointer rallies Arizona State past Texas in Maui Invitational
Maurice Odum hit a go-ahead 3-pointer late and scored a career-high 36 as Arizona State rallied late in an 87-86 victory over Texas.

LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) — Maurice Odum hit a go-ahead 3-pointer late and scored a career-high 36 as Arizona State rallied in an 87-86 victory over Texas on Monday night to close out the first day of the Maui Invitational.

Odum scored seven straight points for Arizona State (5-1), Massamba Diop turned an offensive rebound into a three-point play, and Odum followed with a 3-pointer to give the Sun Devils a 79-78 lead with five minutes remaining.
Dailyn Swain had a pair of go-ahead baskets for Texas (4-2), the second on a layup that made it 84-82 with three minutes to go. Diop scored to tie it with 59 seconds left, but Swain answered with another layup for a two-point lead.
Odum missed a 3-pointer, forcing him to foul Swain, who missed both foul shots. Odum got a second chance and hit from deep with 10 seconds left. Diop stole the ball from Tramon Mark seven seconds later to seal it.
Odum made 6 of 12 shots from outside the arc and just 1 of 9 from inside it, going 16 for 18 at the free-throw line. Anthony Johnson scored 17 off the bench. Dior battled foul trouble and scored six in 17 minutes.

Swain led Texas with 24 points. He made 10 of 14 shots overall but just 3 of 6 at the foul line. Matas Vokietaitis had 15 points and eight rebounds. Mark had 11 points and Jordan Pope scored 10.
Odum had 15 points and Johnson scored 10, accounting for 73.5% of Arizona State’s offense, as the Sun Devils built a 39-34 lead at halftime.

And here we go again . . . Bobby starts every season off on fire, and then comes conference play . . . Wah, wah, wah, with maybe a trip to Dayton. The new AD isn't going to re-sign Hurley, much to the chagrin of U of A fans, who love going to McKale North. They'll be looking for the basketball equivalent of Kenny for the basketball program, so let's enjoy Bobby's last ride.

Good win for ASU vs a No. 17 Texas team who hung with No. 4 Duke in their opener.
I forgot the game was on, and didn't get to watch until 4 minutes remained, but IMHO, that's the best 4 minutes ASU has played all year. Odem was a monster, but the fact is, he's played that well all year. The guy who really stepped up, was Diop, especially in those last 4 minutes. He made some huge plays. 1st, with about a minute to play, when the offense was struggling, he scored on a baby hook over the best player on Texas, looking like it was a shot he's made thousands of times. Then in the last minute, he made a big block from a point blank shot by a Texas player attacking the rim. On the last possession with 10 Seconds left, Diop showed off his athleticism, when he picked up the much smaller, Uber athletic, 6'5" Tramon Mark. He stayed in front, matching Mark step-for-step who was trying to get off the last shot. Diop's effort seemed to shock and surprise Mark so much, that he fumbled the ball away, slipping to the floor. Diop reacted without hesitation, beating everyone on the floor to the loose ball, which he picked up cleanly, dribbling like a PG to the other end, which ran out the clock.
I can imagine Hurley is going to show Diop that replay regularly to boost his confidence. I've already watched it several times, and I know it elevated my confidence in Diop.
