Arizona State QB Sam Leavitt throws touchdown pass on first drive in return vs. Oklahoma State

The Arizona State offense looked smooth with quarterback Sam Leavitt punctuating an efficient drive with a passing touchdown on his first drive back from injury.

The Sun Devils converted both third downs they faced on the drive, including a 29-yard run by running back Cam Skattebo that helped get ASU down the field. Then, it was Leavitt finding wide receiver Jordyn Tyson on a slant route for a 22-yard touchdown and the early 7-0 lead.

Leavitt was 4 of 5 for 43 yards and the touchdown as he made his return, and he was never pressured enough to think about scrambling.

“Good, just keep building on our chemistry and just keep working on these plays,” Tyson said Tuesday of how it felt to have Leavitt back on the field. “There’s always room for growth I feel like, and that’s gonna continue to grow as long as we’re at ASU.”

Head coach Kenny Dillingham said on the Sparky’s Den Podcast on Wednesday he was looking for scores out of the quick passing game, and the slant the two connected on was an early example of what that can look like.

Leavitt’s first run since the injury came on the second drive, as he scrambled for a fourth-down conversion before running out of bounds.

Tyson would later drop a third-and-eight conversion before Parker Lewis, kicking field goals for the first time this season, missed wide right to stall the drive.

The offense later got back on track when Leavitt battled to nearly convert a third-and-eight, setting up a pass to Skattebo in the flat that he took 50 yards for a touchdown on fourth-and-one.
