ASU expected to introduce Herm Edwards at Monday press conference

He was initially linked to the Sun Devils on Tuesday afternoon in a report from 98.7 FM Arizona Sports Station’s Paul Calvisi as a serious candidate for the job.

Arizona State Vice President of University Athletics Ray Anderson was already locked in on Edwards, according to Karpman.

“Anderson is already totally sure he wants to do this,” Karpman said. Crow was on an international trip at the time.

Edwards went 54-74 in his eight NFL seasons and took the Jets to three playoff appearances. Under Edwards, Kansas City went 9-7 and lost in the AFC Wild Card game in 2006 but faltered to 4-12 and 2-14 in his final two years.

Edwards joined 98.7 FM’s Doug & Wolf  Nov. 29, where he said he’d be willing to retain ASU’s offensive coordinator Billy Napier and defensive coordinator Phil Bennett.

“I don’t know if they’re Todd Graham’s guys. They’re football guys,” he said. “Football guys are married to football, in the end. You keep good coaches.

“You don’t get rid of them because they’re somebody else’s guy. Coaches belong to football.”

Now, Napier will assume a “coach in waiting” role according to Jurecki.
