ASU football’s Jordyn Tyson makes go-ahead touchdown catch in win over UCF

Arizona State wide receiver Jordyn Tyson caught two touchdown passes in the second half against UCF on Saturday, and his score with less than five minutes remaining put the Sun Devils up for good in a 35-31 victory.

After a missed field goal by UCF, the Sun Devils drove 71 yards on nine plays to take the lead on a 13-yard connection between Tyson and quarterback Sam Leavitt with 4:55 on the clock.

Tyson caught seven passes for 99 yards with the two touchdowns in the win, which came without star running back Cam Skattebo due to injury. His performance was reminiscent of ASU’s 35-31 win over Kansas earlier this season when Tyson caught two touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

“It’s just my coaches and Sam trusting me,” Tyson told reporters postgame. “They know I’m gonna make a play when my number’s called.”

The two sides went back-and-forth in the second half, as Tyson’s first touchdown catch gave Arizona State a 28-24 lead in the third quarter. The scoring drive was propelled by Leavitt dropping back 15 yards and launching a deep ball to Tyson, who made a spectacular leaping snag in double coverage for 29 yards. Tyson scored five plays later on a nine-yard connection.

“That’s what JT does. He goes and high points the football as good as anybody I’ve been around,” head coach Kenny Dillingham said. “JT has two more years. Sam has three more years. I mean, that could be an exciting combo here for the future of Sun Devil football.”

UCF scored on its next drive, forced a punt and set itself up to take a commanding lead by driving into ASU territory before the missed kick.

Knights running back RJ Harvey was the standout for the visitors, rushing for 127 yards and three touchdowns. Harvey, however, was stuffed on a Wildcat carry on fourth-and-2 with 3:24 remaining. ASU ran the clock down to five seconds.

The Sun Devils went into halftime leading 21-17 after scoring two touchdowns within 10 seconds of each other in the final minutes before the break. Chamon Metayer caught a Leavitt four-yard touchdown pass, and following a special teams blunder by UCF, ASU’s LT Welch returned an interception nine yards for a touchdown.

ASU improved to 7-2 on the season and 4-2 in Big 12 games. The Sun Devils have not lost at home.

“It’s amazing, bro, it’s a huge difference,” Tyson said. “We got people that care … we all love each other, and we all so close. I think it’s the reason why we’re in this position now.”
