Is the Sun Devils’ April Fools’ joke actually a good idea?

It was an April Fools' joke. But is ASU's concept of a maroon football field at Mountain America Stadium actually a good idea?

We’re asking basic dads to open their minds for two minutes: At the sacrifice of the Mountain America Stadium field ditching the live bermuda, what if Arizona State’s home turf got a little more maroon?

It is April Fools’ Day and not part of actual upcoming updates to the Sun Devils’ facilities, so don’t fall for the trick. But the ASU football account posted a mockup of an all-maroon field that is apparently “coming this fall.”

Former Arizona State groundskeeper Brian Johnson, who retired in 2022 after 37 years on the job, would probably hurl. Head coach Kenny Dillingham said Tuesday that the idea, to him, “was atrocious,” and that he wasn’t on board with the April Fools’ Day prank.

But fans in the reply section to the Sun Devils’ post on X actually kind of liked the idea of taking a page of the Boise State’s book.

Not everyone is pleased with the thought, though.
