While Arizona State went through three quarterbacks on Saturday, it was freshman running back Cardae Mack who stole the show in ASU’s 28-17 win over Kansas State.
Mack accounted for all four of the Sun Devils’ touchdowns in Saturday’s win and continued to establish himself as the new star in the ASU backfield.
The 5-foot-10 freshman finished the day with 159 yards on 26 carries, averaging 6.1 yards each time he got the rock.
After four carries through ASU’s first three games of the season, Mack got some run against Baylor before breaking out with 154 yards and two scores in ASU’s win over Hawaii.
The Houston, Texas native followed that with 27 yards on seven carries against Texas Tech, along with 17 yards in the receiving game, in a game where minimal things went right for the Sun Devils before a second breakout game against Kansas State.
Mack brought the energy for ASU on Saturday and provided a boost in momentum every time the Sun Devils needed it.
Senior quarterback Mikey Keene started his first game of the season and led ASU right down the field on its opening drive, which Mack capped with a score.
But Keene went down injured just before halftime, and that gave way to previously benched Cutter Boley for a couple of possessions before the Sun Devils handed the reins to freshman quarterback Jake Fette.
While the ASU offense got a jolt when Fette entered the game, it was due to Mack’s legs, breaking off one impressive run after another.
Mack seems to have taken over the lead back role for the Sun Devils, as he earned 26 of the 30 carries by ASU backs on Saturday.
The Sun Devils got back above .500 with their win over Kansas State, and now they will travel to play at BYU on Halloween.
